Korn didn't get the memo
Meanwhile, on the other side of town, in a (ahem- really stupid- ahem) deal with Live Nation, rockers Korn have decided to make the return of their Family Values tour a more inclusive event by offering cheaper tickets. All the tickets for the lawn will be offered at the rock bottom price of $9.99-- which is probably cheaper than their CD at most outlets. I'm not sure who they think they're helping by pricing their tickets less than a meal at Sizzler, but I'd be OK to eat my words if they are right.

I don't really follow such things, but are Korn still considered a draw?
I guess their manager must be a little shaky on that himself.
I try to distance myself from anyone who might honestly know the answer to that question.
What I can say is there is no honor in underselling yourself. None at all.

Just found your new site ... having read through a few posts I think there's one thing you haven't mentioned (or maybe you have) that I think Korn is onto with this ticket price.
My guess is that Korn is going for a young audience with that price (and music) - and kids are probably way more likely to spend money on t-shirts and gear.
The band I play with now makes the majority of its money, not that we're quitting our day jobs, selling shirts to kids. The CD sells too, but that cost us a lot of money to record.
I don't think you'll get many hipsters to buy a Clap Your Hands Say Yeah hat at any price, and I'd be curious to know how well the acts drawing older crowds do on merch, but if a band can get an extra 100 or 1000 kids in the door, there's potential for a lot of extra revenue.

I'd only be curious about the price points on the merch. With venues taking merch splits on soft sales (shirts, hats, etc), bands are forced to jack up the prices on that stuff exorbitantly.
I'm gonna drop Professor Krueger an email to find out whether his research has any discussion of merch.

You're right - oddly enough lower down the food chain (even in some reasonable sized rooms) I've seen bands getting 100% of the merch so I forgot to consider that venues do get in on that. Despite the decent deal on merch, the same bands get a lousy cut of the door - so it is still a rough deal.
